Under a technical assistance initiative in the country, the GIZ mandated Econoler to support Morocco in implementing the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Program aimed at improving Morocco’s chances of accessing GCF financing as well as other sources of climate finance. The objectives of this assignment were to provide international expertise in: (1) Developing and implementing financing and investment plans; (2) building the capacity of various market players; and (3) continually updating Morocco’s country program under the GCF.
Econoler assisted the government of Morocco with the following:
-
Developing a gender-sensitive financing strategy;
-
Determining the financing strategy and investment plans for two priority economic sectors that will be identified during the mandate;
-
Improving the participatory process for continually updating the GCF’s Country Program;
-
Implementing a coordination mechanism for climate financing involving the financial sector;
-
Capacity building in the financial and private sectors in Morocco at the national, regional and municipal levels;
-
Capacity building of financial institutions in developing green finance in the project portfolios.
As a result of this project, the institutional and human capacities of Morocco were developed to attract more financing from the GCF as well as other sources of climate finance.
