Econoler conducted a comprehensive study of emerging technologies that can be retrofitted in small and medium commercial buildings and residential properties and supported through prescriptive incentives under utility energy efficiency programs. The primary focus of the study was on automation and control technologies, including integrated control solutions and automated demand response.

The research was focused on technologies that are suitable for scaled program implementation and with potential to deliver energy savings and peak demand reductions. Econoler began the study with a structured market and technology scan, including a targeted literature review, to identify relevant emerging technologies. Building on this initial screening, Econoler developed an adoptability and prioritization scoring framework to assess a shortlist of options, considering multiple criteria such as technical readiness, savings potential, availability, and suitability for prescriptive program delivery. Econoler also conducted interviews with technology providers and other market actors to validate findings and identify market barriers and opportunities.

The results of the study provided a prioritized set of emerging technologies to inform portfolio and program design decisions for participating utilities.
