In 2018, the governments of Canada and Chile initiated a bilateral discussion to explore considerations on Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. In parallel, the Government of Canada supported West African countries with Article 6, and it was interested in promoting an exchange of experience and views between Chile and West African countries.   The exchanges of experience were intended to build on the lessons learned and products developed in the context of an ongoing cooperation between Chile and Canada on implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This project was aimed at structuring and facilitating such a virtual exchange between Chile and countries in West Africa.

The exchanges were structured in two streams of webinars:

  • Stream 1: Training sessions on Article 6 and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) accounting for West African countries.
  • Stream 2: Exchanges of experience and lessons learned between Chile and West African countries.

Econoler structured and facilitated the training sessions and exchanges with the objective of enhancing understanding on issues related to participating in Article 6 mechanisms. The exchange sessions enabled participants to reflect on revising their country’s NDC to prepare for participation in Article 6, understand the opportunity costs of exporting ITMOs, and discuss the mechanics of conducting corresponding adjustments to emission balances for ITMO transfers.
