The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat, an initiative of the European Commission, is the central platform for the clean energy transition of the more than 2,200 inhabited European islands. Despite having access to renewable energy sources such as wind and wave energy, many of them depend on expensive fossil fuel imports for their energy supply. Islands all over Europe are accelerating their clean energy transition, and their stories are truly inspiring. The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat supports European islands in their journey with technical support, capacity building activities, and networking opportunities.

The European Commission sought support from a consortium to engage with regional organizations and islanders to support them in their energy transition.

Econoler has been mandated to lead the financial support component for the consortium and support the secretariat in the following activities:

  • Select islands to receive support under the initiative;
  • Support 30 EU islands to become 100% renewable by 2030 by delivering adapted technical assistance in the fields of energy efficiency (EE) and financing advice;
  • Organize and deliver workshops related to EE and financing energy transition projects on islands;
  • Activate the marketplace of EU islands through hands-on financial advice, and mapping concrete sources of funding for the island RE projects, matching funding sources with RE island financing plans, and structuring project financing.

Thanks to the work under this assignment, the EU islands will be able to advance in their energy transition.
