project description

The Global Climate Partnership Fund S.A. (GCPF) requested Econoler to conduct a documental analysis to determine the baseline on: 1) the operation of a new rotatory kiln incinerator acquired by GADERE and 2) the use of tire chips as alternative fuel for thermal energy production in a cement plant of HOLCIM. The equipment using new technologies in both cases were acquired through a loan of Banco Procredit of Ecuador, under the GCPF. The purpose was to determine if the target of 20 % emission reduction was possible, in respect of the baseline defined for each case, as specified by the GCPF.

HIGHLIGHTS

In the first phase of the analysis (kiln) Econoler carried out the following activities:

  • Collected and documented technical specifications of similar kilns to take as possible baselines, because at the beginning of consultation, the operation data of the new kiln were not provided by GADERE.
  • Collected and documented technical specifications and operating data of the old and new kiln, when some operation data were made available.
  • Quantitative estimation was carried out with available data to perform the energy analysis.
  • Calculated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, to verify the estimation drafted with the reduction of up to 20% the energy consumption and emissions, in respect of the baseline.

In the second phase of the analysis (tire shredder), Econoler performed the following actions:

  • Collected and documented technical specifications and operation of the shredder.
  • Calculated transport emission reduction, substituting fossil fuel with tire shredder.
  • Emission analysis of the new shredder was conducted based on the information provided by GADERE and taking into account several fuel emission factors.
  • Calculated fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, to verify the estimation drafted with the reduction of up to 20% the energy consumption and emissions, in respect of the baseline.

After the desktop analysis and conclusions were discussed, it was concluded that the verification of desktop analysis and on-site visit were not necessary.

Econoler provided GCPF the necessary technical assistance to conduct a preliminary assessment for the EE and energy audits.
